SIMULACRI (2023) is a semi-generative sound installation based on a combinatorial logic of preselected sound materials, interconnected in real time through varying degrees of morphological similarity. These materials are excerpts from some sessions of improvisation recorded during a residency at Alfonso Fratteggiani Bianchi’s studio, located in the Rocca di Sant’Apolinnare (Perugia, IT). In this work, the act of improvisation is delegated to an algorithm that functions as a digital simulacrum. By autonomously selecting files through spectromorphological descriptors within a database, the machine emulates the presence and the interactive dynamics of the three performers, perpetually reconfiguring the original materials into ever-changing sonic trajectories. The sound is diffused across three distinct zones via multichannel audio configurations, establishing a spatial dialogue shaped by the specific acoustic qualities of the architectural space. The result is a polyphony of spaces, in which the three sound sources collide, merge, and dissolve, constantly redefining the listener’s perceptual experience.
